Yesterday I was walking down Avenida Santa Fe -downtown Buenos Aires- when I walked into Buenos Aires's legendary and iconic El Ateneo bookshop/library.
El Ateneo used to be a huge theatre in the 1920s called Teatro Grand Splendid. Legendary tango singers like Carlos Gardel and Francisco Canaro performed in the "Grand Splendid," that seated 1050 people. Later, it became one of the first and only cinemas in Buenos Aires.
By the year 2000, the theatre underwent a huge renovation that involved replacing the seats for tons of bookshelves and tables, to create the ultimate beautiful place to read an buy books.
Nowadays, there is a small café where the stage is, and there's always some jazzy tune playing.
The original columns and ceilings are still part of the lovely bookshop.
What are your city's best kept secret?
El Ateneo reminds me of a Breakfast at Tiffany's scene when Holly visits the New York Public Library. Have you ever visited Buenos Aires?
Thank you for reading!
